Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts!

“Self-pity is when you exaggerate how bad your life is. When you start to get helpless, hopeless, and you think there’s no hope and life can never get better, you dig in your heels and stay stuck. So if you say you are going to work on not feeling sorry for yourself, instead say that you’re going to work on gratitude. That’s one really simple way to start changing your life and building mental muscle.” – Amy Morin

As we approach the end of another year, once again I’ll be sharing my “Holiday Picks” selections, featuring some of the top Finding Brave episodes that have previously aired, to help you enter 2022 with even more bravery and motivation to pursue your goals.

In today’s episode, I bring you one of our most popular episodes, which featured a conversation on what you can start doing right now to change the way you think, train your brain to work for you (not against you), and to build the mental strength that you need to reach your greatest potential.

Amy Morin is a licensed clinical social worker, psychotherapist, and psychology lecturer at Northeastern University. She’s also an international bestselling author of four books, including 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don’t Do (translated into more than 40 languages), 13 Things Mentally Strong Parents Don’t Do, and 13 Things Mentally Strong Women Don’t Do and her latest, 13 Things Strong Kids Do. The Guardian dubbed her “the self-help guru of the moment” and Forbes calls her a “thought leadership star.”

Her TEDx talk, The Secret of Becoming Mentally Strong, is one of the most popular talks of all time with close to 20 million views. She is editor-in-chief of Very Well Mind and a regular contributor to Forbes, Business Insider, and Psychology Today, with articles  on mental strength reaching more than 2 million readers every month.

Her advice for building mental strength has been featured by major media outlets, including Fox News, CNN, Oprah.com, Today, Good Morning America, Success, Business Insider, Time, and the Hallmark Channel.

In this episode Amy shares her framework for learning to control your emotions and take positive actions, which will result in you taking back your power. Amy is someone who is not only inspirational as a wonderful therapist, but as a writer and influencer in the way that she crafts her messages, which is why I’m so excited to bring you this conversation with her today.

Interestingly, we recorded this well before the global pandemic hit, but each insight that Amy shares can be used today, to help us cope and even thrive through these very trying times.

Highlights from this Episode:

  • What led Amy to the work she does, and why she chooses to focus on what not to do in order to build mental strength [5:51]

  • How to know what mental strength looks like, plus the ways that it differs from mental health [9:38]

  • The real reason a lot of people stay in “victim mode” [13:03]

  • Amy’s simple steps for building your mental muscles that anyone can do right now [16:08]

  • How to consciously stop feeling pity for yourself, and why asking for help is absolutely essential in the journey to build mental strength [19:35]

QUOTES FROM TODAY’S SHOW:

“When we talk about mentally strong people, we often look at Navy Seals or elite athletes, but what does it look like to be a strong woman?” [2:55]

“What’s the worst habit you have? What counter-productive thing are you doing? When we get rid of that, all of your hard work becomes much more effective. I saw it work, so then I applied it to my own life.” [6:42]

“It’s much easier to think you’re a victim of a cruel world and the cruel people in it rather than you have the power to change your life.” [14:20]

FINALLY, PLEASE ASK YOUR ORGANIZATION TO BRING THE MOST POWERFUL YOU TRAINING TO YOUR WORKFORCE TODAY

Is your organization committed to supporting the growth and success of both women and men in your workforce? If so, do they offer opportunities for powerful hands-on career growth and leadership training that addresses the real-world challenges that professional women face in the workplace and in their careers that are often different from what men typically face?

I’m so thrilled that recently, a division of the United Nations recently sponsored several memberships to The Most Powerful You course for their staff members and what a powerfully supportive move that is, to bring real-world effective career and leadership training to professionals in their work cultures, to help them thrive and succeed and the highest level possible in their work and projects.

Coaching so many professionals and leaders as I do each year, I see that leadership and career growth training programs today are so often NOT effective because they simply don’t go deep enough to address what really holds us back from thriving, believing in ourselves, recognizing our talents and abilities, communicating effectively, asking for what we need, saying “STOP!” to mistreatment, building a great support community, and making the true impact we long to.

I’d like to make this request of you today:

Please take a look at what I’m teaching in The Most Powerful You course, which is the digital companion course to my book The Most Powerful You: 7 Bravery-Boosting Paths to Career Bliss, now translated into Chinese and Arabic and designated a top leadership book by the Leader to Leader Journal and among the TOP 5 books for productivity, confidence-building, addressing stress and burnout, helping new grads make a “dent in the Universe” and more by The Next Big Idea Club

If you feel that this content — about 7 most damaging power gaps that prevent 98% of women and 90% of men from reaching their highest potential and most rewarding goals and how to close those gaps for good — would be helpful for you personally and for the people at your organization, I hope you’ll ask your leaders, supervisors, HR leaders, DEI managers and Learning & Development staff to sponsor memberships of this course for you and other staff, so you can all thrive at the highest level in your roles and organizations.

And as always, please feel free to join the course directly

Thank you so much and here’s to becoming The Most Powerful You!
