“I knew that if it was between becoming a movie star but staying that size, or just becoming a civilian who had a normal job and was healthy, I would have picked that in a second.” – Josh Peck

Our special guest is back today for Part Two of our fascinating conversation, where he dives deeper into his very personal story of weight loss, overcoming addiction, growing up on TV, what he’s learned about being a father, and how he reacted to the breakdown of a relationship that played out in a dramatic way in the public eye.

Josh Peck has established himself as one of Hollywood’s rising talents, making the transition from child actor to leading man, and social media influencer. Best known for his role on the Nickelodeon phenomenon Drake & Josh (2004-2007) for which he received a Kids’ Choice Nomination, Josh has starred in feature films such as Mean Creek alongside Rory Culkin, The Wackness beside Ben Kingsley, Red Dawn alongside Chris Hemsworth, Danny Collins with Al Pacino, Annette Benning, and Jennifer Garner, Take The 10 with Andy Samberg and Fred Armisen, and Netflix’s The Musical, co-starring Debra Messing, out later this year. In 2023, Josh will co-star in Christopher Nolan’s new movie, Oppenheimer.

Currently, Josh is featured in Disney Plus’ Turner and Hooch series, a continuation of the 1989 Tom Hanks film of the same name, and stars in the highly anticipated Hulu series, How I Met Your Father, and in the iCarly Reboot on Paramount+.

With 32.8 million fans across numerous social media platforms, Josh successfully leveraged his talents from acting, to podcasting and more, and is the author of the new memoir Happy People Are Annoying, out in bookstores March 15th.  His book is a candid memoir sharing Josh’s reflections on the many stumbles and silver linings of his life and traces a zigzagging path to redemption.

Again, I was so pleased to have this opportunity to speak with Josh and to bring him on the podcast to share his wise and refreshing insights on happiness and a life well-lived.

Highlights from this Episode:

  • How Josh realized that his way was not working and he had to try something else to lose weight [8:04]
  • Why he says that it was an inside job to overcome his addiction to drugs and alcohol [9:31]
  • Some surprising pushback he received about his commitment to lose weight and the impact that it would have on his reputation as being “the funny fat guy” [10:38]
  • What he feels may have been behind the reaction of people not being happy for his transformation [12:04]
  • Josh’s insights on being a son and byproduct of a caring mother [13:44]
  • The things he wants to do now as a father to a young son [15:35]
  • What Josh has learned about being in the public eye and the way he handled a public relationship that soured [17:28]

QUOTES FROM TODAY’S SHOW:

“I was sick and tired of [trying things] my way. I tried it my way for so many years. I would start a diet on Monday, and by Tuesday I’d ask what happened, and then the pattern would repeat itself.” [8:04]

“If you’re feeling at a bottom and slightly hopeless and just so frustrated with your way, I’m so sorry that you’re going through that. I know how painful that is, but the good news is it’s a great place to start.” [8:43]

“[With drugs and alcohol] I was just solidly trying to become a cliché more and more, every single day.” [9:31]

“I knew that I was bottomless. I had tried everything and nothing could fill me up, so it had to be an inside job.” [10:10]

“That’s what we do as parents, we correct generational trauma. We try to fix, or give to our kids what we didn’t have.” [14:45]

“Your character is your fate, and I’ve allowed a good life to be the result of good living.” [19:07]

“The greatest remedy to anger is time and taking a pause.” [20:28]

IS YOUR ORGANIZATION COMMITTED TO DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION AND SUPPORTING PROFESSIONAL WOMEN AND OTHER UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS TO SUCCEED AND THRIVE IN YOUR WORKPLACE?

IF SO, PLEASE ASK YOUR LEADERS TO SPONSOR THE MOST POWERFUL YOU COURSE/TRAINING FOR YOUR WORKFORCE TODAY!

Is your organization committed to supporting the growth and success of women and other underrepresented groups in your workforce? If so, do they offer opportunities for powerful hands-on career growth and leadership training that addresses the real-world challenges that these groups face in the workplace and in their careers that are often different from what men typically face?

I’m so thrilled that recently, an international division of the United Nations recently sponsored several memberships to The Most Powerful You course for their staff members and what a powerfully supportive move that is, to bring real-world effective career and leadership training to professionals in their work cultures, to help them thrive and succeed and the highest level possible in their work and projects.

Coaching so many professionals and leaders as I do each year, I see that leadership and career growth training programs today are so often NOT effective because they simply don’t go deep enough to address what really holds us back from thriving, believing in ourselves, recognizing our talents and abilities, communicating effectively, asking for what we need, saying “STOP!” to mistreatment, building a great support community, and making the true impact we long to.

I’d like to make this request of you today:

Please take a look at what I’m teaching in The Most Powerful You course, which is the digital companion course to my book The Most Powerful You: 7 Bravery-Boosting Paths to Career Bliss, now being translated into Chinese, Arabic and Polish, and designated a top leadership book by the Leader to Leader journal and among the TOP 5 books for productivity, innovation, confidence-building, addressing stress and burnout, helping new grads make a “dent in the Universe” and more by The Next Big Idea Club

If you feel that this content — about 7 most damaging power gaps that prevent 98% of women and 90% of men from reaching their highest potential and most thrilling and rewarding goals and how to close those gaps for good — would be helpful for you personally and for the people at your organization, I hope you’ll ask your leaders, supervisors, HR leaders, DEI managers and Learning & Development staff and ERGs to sponsor memberships of this course for you and other staff, so you can all thrive at the highest level in your roles and organizations.

And as always, please feel free to join the course directly

Thank you so much for taking a stand for your best and happiest life, and here’s to becoming The Most Powerful You!
